Eva Paige and Christmas in July

New designer Eve Paige has lots of Christmas patterns from which to choose.  Beth Helfter is the force behind Eva Paige and her patterns are unique; they are not your ordinary one block over and over.  Highlighted below are a few of her patterns that are suitable for Christmas and winter time…

Syncopated Christmas breaks the rules! It’s made without exact measurement and with angled piecing.   Make two and there’s no chance they will look the same.  This quilt is finished off with an appliqued bow.  Of couse, you don’t HAVE to add the appliqued bow, but it sure finishes the quilt nicely, doesn’t it?

Winter Whites is a beautiful wall hanging that allows you to use your creativity.  The background is piecied and the white pointsettias really shine.  Or use cream for your background and make red pointsettias.  Whatever color scheme you choose, you can add beads, embroidery, buttons… let your imagination run loose.   If you enjoy this pattern, Eva Paige has a similiar summer design, Sunflower and Sky.

Remember those paper snowflakes you make in grade school by folding the paper and cutting along the edges? It made you feel sooooo creative and talented didn’t it?  Well, check out Snowflake Sizzle.  These snowflakes are included in the pattern but get out that freezer paper and start making it snow!

When you are finished creating with scissors but still looking for snowflakes, there’s another Snowflake Sizzle pattern.  This one has more sedate snowflakes at first but then you can jazz them up with embellishments.

Eva Paige has much more than just Christmas patterns, and her designs are unique.   Have fun with your last jump into Christmas in July.  When you are ready to give Christmas a rest check out Eva Paige’s other designs and take a look at the others designers and their quilt patterns.

Quilted Flash Memory Stick Holders with Fat Quarters

Technology is GREAT, but it can be a little BORING! So why not have fun and personalize yours with a fun holder! These USB Memory Stick/Dongle Holders are a neat idea to protect your data and photos from the rigors of travel and keep it all close at hand. Just pack and go – it’s in the bag, backpack, sewing kit, suitcase, briefcase or wear as a necklace. They’re a cinch to make and fun to give as gifts!

We have had a great response to this pattern. Everyone is making them to store and carry embroidery designs to class – and of course they wanted to make theirs special! During class(es), I encourage my students to make machine-embroidered designs on a fat quarter of fabric and then cut out the USB pieces from the embellished fabric. Everyone is different and it’s so much fun to see the end results. Some students continue to embellish with beads, crystals or sequins; one student, using her embroidery machine, stitched the date/year on the fabric of several she made, claiming that we wanted to scan all her scrap booking pages and store each year’s creations on individual sticks. Another student, a “Mother of the Bride,” made a fantastic holder using white satin covered with beautiful machine-embroidered lace designs, which she then embellished with tiny glass pearls around the top flap using a ribbon rose like a button and a string of tiny glass pearls as the handle. She planned to scan all of her daughter’s wedding pictures, store them on a USB stick and present the collection in the beautiful holder. A month later I ran into her, and she was now making them for everyone in the wedding party plus a few extra to store in safety deposit boxes! I like to store audible books on my USB sticks…so each USB holder is embellished with fabric and items to reflect the book’s content. Don’t forget to store copies of all your favorite family recipes on an USB Stick.

Once you choose your machine embroidery designs, stitch them out on your background fabric. In this example we stitch out a block of “Blackwork,” large enough to cut two USB Holder pieces, as well as, one lace design large enough for one USB Holder piece.

If you cut a template from Quilter’s Plastic, you’ll be able to see through the plastic to the design. Arrange template as desired (making sure to include seam allowances), cut all your pieces and follow the pattern instructions.

Embellish as desired and enjoy!

If you don’t have a embroidery machine, you can choose theme fabric and embellish with theme buttons, beads or charms. There are hundreds of ways to personalize your holders – just think of all the sportsmen, students, pet lovers in your life and how you could make something special for them.

These are really a lot of fun to make and give as gifts; and like I stated on the back of the pattern cover: technology is GREAT, but it can be a little BORING! So why not have fun and personalize yours. No more cookie-cutters holders for you…now go and have some fun creating your very own designs!

Hello from moose Country Quilts in wintry north Idaho!

Stackabar quilt patternCheck out my newest patterns for some easy-to-finish projects. #220 Stackabar Quilt is a quilt-as-you-go project in three sizes, from baby size to large lap size. Made with flannels it is oh, so soft and cuddly! There are no seams to match, so even really new quilters can be successful. Just pick your favorite fabrics or a couple of fat quarter bundles and you are ready to go! My students absolutely love this pattern and made several for Christmas presents this year. Those of you who are teachers, this one is perfect for a one-day workshop.

Heart Sampler quilt patternIf you’re like me and have way too many unfinished projects, try my new #221 Heart Sampler pattern. These postcards with four heart designs are small, cute, and finish-able (if that’s a word)! You can have some fun embellishing with beads and using decorative threads, but in a manageable amount. And did I mention, they’re fast and easy to finish?! Great for special wedding invitations, engagement announcements, Valentine’s Day, or just to say you care. Teachers, again this is a good half-day class with little preparation by you or your students.

Keep your hands busy and those needles threaded, and enjoy the winter! I’m getting ready to teach more adult classes locally, and to teach fabric art to elementary kids in a neighboring community. Did I mention I am now the proud owner of a long-arm machine? Never a dull moment in my home!!
