Trick or Treat

Time to get sewing for autumn holidays.  The first to come will be Halloween.  No tricks – try these treats.  Yummmm!!  Sweets with NO calories!  Aren’t these Sweet Confections pincushions the cutest!  Use Halloween colors and arrange a few on a plate, add a spider or two and you have a wonderfully creative Halloween centerpiece.

The sweet treats are ready. Now to dress the table with Bats in the Belfry table runner and placemats.  This pattern by Sue Shipman of Friendship Designs is spooky enough as it is but you could add a few embroidered insects fot the bats to eat and really get the Halloween ewww factor!

Who doesn’t like making new friends?  Friends of Halloween would dress up a side table.  Make a few of the spiders and spread them around the candy bowl to add some spookiness to the treats.

Have you made any of the patterns from the “Straddling Series?”  If you haven’t, the Straddling Witch is one to try.  All the quilts in this series are the same size.  The quilts have pieced background and applique figures.  The straddling figures are all assembled in the same manner.  You’ll feel like you are working with an old friend when you make more than one.  There are over a dozen from witch – oops! – from which to choose. And if you fall in love with these cute characters there are a few notepads available each featuring a different straddling figure.

Well, after all that you are finally ready for the trick-or-treaters.  You could make a wallhanging to hang on your door to let them know you are welcoming them.   Welcome Halloween has all the requirements: a full moon, a bat, a ghost and a pumpkin!

There are many more Halloween patterns available, so do some browsing at Quilters Warehouse.   There you will find quilt patterns for any whim, need or desire.

In the not too distant future..

Well, sad to say, but summer is almost over and fall will be upon us before we know it. It’s time to add a bit of autumn decor to your home. These quilt patterns are just the start of what you can find with an autumn theme.

Delectable Autumn by Sew Many Visions has instructions for a mantle throw, a table runner and place mats.  The appliqued leaves seem to dance across the center of the table runner.  Batiks would really make the leaves come alive.

Autumn Star Pattern by Rachel’s of Greenfield has a block that is so versatile.  Make all three layouts in pretty fall colors and you’ll have a nice grouping for your wall.  Then make the same three in Christmas fabrics and you’ll have a head start on your Christmas decorating.  You’ll be ready to swap out the autumn and bring in the Christmas when it’s time. If you find you like making wall hanging sized quilts, this designer has lots of wall hanging patterns as well as several punch needle embroidery patterns.

Ok, you have the table covered, the mantle covered and wall hangings up.  Now for a lap quilt… Autumn Stars Lap Quilt by Kay Gentry looks like just the one.  Only 15 blocks, a couple borders and you are finished.

When you finish all your Autumn projects you can curl up under this lap quilt while you browse your lap top for the perfect Christmas patterns and Christmas fabrics.  Before you know it we’ll be looking at Spring and Summer patterns and fabrics again.  Seems like each year goes by a little faster than the last.

Eva Paige and Christmas in July

New designer Eve Paige has lots of Christmas patterns from which to choose.  Beth Helfter is the force behind Eva Paige and her patterns are unique; they are not your ordinary one block over and over.  Highlighted below are a few of her patterns that are suitable for Christmas and winter time…

Syncopated Christmas breaks the rules! It’s made without exact measurement and with angled piecing.   Make two and there’s no chance they will look the same.  This quilt is finished off with an appliqued bow.  Of couse, you don’t HAVE to add the appliqued bow, but it sure finishes the quilt nicely, doesn’t it?

Winter Whites is a beautiful wall hanging that allows you to use your creativity.  The background is piecied and the white pointsettias really shine.  Or use cream for your background and make red pointsettias.  Whatever color scheme you choose, you can add beads, embroidery, buttons… let your imagination run loose.   If you enjoy this pattern, Eva Paige has a similiar summer design, Sunflower and Sky.

Remember those paper snowflakes you make in grade school by folding the paper and cutting along the edges? It made you feel sooooo creative and talented didn’t it?  Well, check out Snowflake Sizzle.  These snowflakes are included in the pattern but get out that freezer paper and start making it snow!

When you are finished creating with scissors but still looking for snowflakes, there’s another Snowflake Sizzle pattern.  This one has more sedate snowflakes at first but then you can jazz them up with embellishments.

Eva Paige has much more than just Christmas patterns, and her designs are unique.   Have fun with your last jump into Christmas in July.  When you are ready to give Christmas a rest check out Eva Paige’s other designs and take a look at the others designers and their quilt patterns.
