Flying Geese in Quilt Patterns

Are you hooked on making flying geese blocks? Then here’s a few quilt patterns that you should like.

Geese in the Fields is made of flying geese blocks and large square blocks. How easy can it get? 13 fat quarters will make this 57″ X 87″ quilt. The flying geese “randomly” placed in the border add interest to this design.

The Flying Goose is a vertical row quilt that you can make in a day.  It will make a great wallhanging or a doll quilt.  Reverse the direction of the geese in one of the rows for a slightly different look.  The pattern features designer Tara Lynn Darr’s “no fear” piecing instructions that will make the flying geese units a breeze to make.

Wild Goose Chase Through the Cabin combines Flying Geese and Log Cabin blocks.  A variations that adds Courthouse Steps blocks is also included.

And, if you are completely addicted to flying geese, here is a book and ruler that you will find absolutely necessary!  Flying Geese and More has instructions for 150!!! flying geese blocks using the Flying Geese X 4 No Math Ruler.  Make flying geese in sizes from itty-bitty (.75″ X 1.5″) to very large (3.5″ X 7″). You’ll have flocks and flocks of geese before you know it.

Here’s a really stunning quilt with lots of flying geese, among other blocks.  This quilt graced the cover Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine.  Lady of 10,000 Lakes, finishing at 99″ square,  will be a showpiece.

This was just a sampling, there are many more quilt patterns with flying geese so browse away!

Wrap it up Quilty style!

Have you finished all your quilty Christmas gifts? Not yet?! Hurry!!! Only 9 more days ‘til Christmas!

When you do finish, of course you are not really finished…. They need to be wrapped. How often do we sew, sew, sew, and then throw it in a gift bag. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! But, you worked hard and put a lot of yourself into your quilty gifts so wrap them that way. There’s no time like the present to present them in a way that adds to the present (puns intended). Here’s a few suggestions.

Tissue paper always adds a little something extra. Make it the final layer even if you don’t use a box.

Add some ribbon from fabric… perhaps a bit of fabric that matches the gift. Don’t worry about the frayed edges – they’ll add to the whimsy. Or zigzag stitch along the edges and the ribbon will be a bit curly.

Add a button to the ribbon.

Make a little card out of fabric: Cut fabric and paper to the same size. Stitch around the edges. Here’s your chance to use those decorative stitches. Stitch a straight line down the center fold. Write you message inside. Decorate the front if you want.

I was the lucky recipient of these last two. The presentation brought as much pleasure as the gift!

Whatever you do, have fun with it. And when you’re finished treat yourself to a visit to Quilter’s Warehouse and browse the quilt patterns to find your next project.

Pacific Patchworks is New! at QuiltersWarehouse

Paula Stoddard of Pacific Patchwork has lots of fun quilt patterns. Many of the patterns are scrappy looking and full of color.

Rickety Rails is sort of a variation of a split rail. Strip piecing will make this quilt go together so fast.  Instructions for three different sized quilts are included.

Any dog lover would love DEM BONES! And you’ll have fun making it – and fun picking out the perfect novelty fabric to use.  It will finish at 47 1/2″ X 56″ so if you have a lap dog there’ll be just enough room for the two of you to enjoy the warmth.  It’s another quilt that will go together quickly and be sooo cute when it’s finished.

Here’s a quilt that would make a great gift for any college students you know.  Use their team colors – perfect for football games or for decorating their dorm room.  Give this quilt and they’ll be your #1 FAN!

How about some applique?  This pattern has instructions for a wall hanging and for a pillow.  They’ll both look great in your family room or guest bedroom.  You’ll do piecing, machine applique and stitchery… a little bit of everything… “variety is the spice of life.”

And if you love fat quarters, or have a collection of charms, try out one of Pacific Patchwork’s “Hooked On…” patterns.  Hooked on Fats has patterns for 4 quick easy quilts made from fat quarters.

When you finish those, you can try Hooked on Fats 2.  But not before you try Hooked on Charms…

Again, instructions for 4 quilts.  A great way to showcase all the fabrics from a favorite line and use every one!

Paula and Pacific Patchwork have lots more patterns from which to choose.  Check them all out, and as always, browse through the other quilt patterns at Quilters Warehouse.
