Stiff Stuff & Texture Magic = Clutch Purse (A Tutorial)

Do you need a new purse for a holiday party?  This is an EASY and QUICK clutch purse . . . and CUTE, too!

You will need:
Main fabric – one piece 2.5″ x 13″  and  one piece 12.5″ x 13″
Accent fabric - one piece 4″ x 16″ (for front detail)
Lining fabric – one Fat Quarter
Batting – one piece 14″ x 18″
Stiff Stuff – one piece 14″ x 18″
Texture Magic – one piece 15.5″ x 3.5″

Pin your Texture Magic to the wrong side of the Accent Fabric.  Stitch wavy lines.  These are about 1/3 inch apart.  Apply steam from a hot iron to the Texture Magic WITHOUT touching it.  Stay above it!  Watch as your fabric curls up and develops beautiful texture.

Sew a piece of the Main Fabric to each long side of the newly texturized Accent Fabric.   This will be the exterior of your clutch.

Lay clutch exterior right side up on top of the batting and pin.  Stitch several straight lines anywhere you want.

Trim batting and the excess Accent Fabric, making sure the piece remains ‘square’ (a squared rectangle as opposed to a wonky rectangle).

Lay quilted clutch exterior on top of lining fabric, right sides together. Sew 1/4″ around the outside edges of the exterior piece, leaving an 8″ opening on the short end opposite the accent piece end.

Trim excess.  Measure the area between the edge stitching and cut the Stiff Stuff 1/2″ smaller than this measurement.

Reach inside and turn the bag right side out.  Gently roll the Stiff Stuff and ease inside the bag between the batting and the lining.  Smooth Stiff Stuff flat.  Topstitch along the short end with the opening to close it and add another detail.  Stitch a few more random lines across the bag – these will hold the Stiff Stuff in place.

Fold up, right sides together, about 4.5″ of the side away from the accent piece.  Stitch a very tight zig zag stitch, catching just the very edges of the fabric.  Turn right side out, fold down top.

Go Party!

Pine Tree Lodge Quilt Patterns

Quilt patterns from Pine Tree Lodge (located in Minnesota – have you ever noticed how many talented quilters and quilt designers come from Minnesota? – must be something in the air there!) are full of variety.  Simple pieced patterns, intricate pieced patterns, colorful, muted, applique, piecing mixed with applique, quilts, table toppers, samplers, totes and more!  No matter your skill level, or the type of quilt you prefer, you’ll probably find several patterns that you like.

Homegrown Winter is a sampler with snow scenes, bells, a bright red cardinal, and several traditional blocks : friendship stars, log cabin, flying geese.  Easy applique templates are included in the pattern.  The wallhanging finishes at 34″ x 44″.   Swap this out with the other Homegrown sampler patterns: Spring, Summer and Fall.

A Parade of Seasons is another group of seasonal samplers.   Both of these sets of samplers are great for cleaning up some of those fabric scraps that seem to keep multiplying.

It’s called Heartstrings, but you can choose pine trees or stars if you prefer.  Use flannel or chenille to add texture.  This makes a great baby quilt.  Grandkids, anyone?!

Daisy Dash uses a modified churn dash block to simulate daisies sprinkled across the quilt.  The pattern includes instructions for four sizes: bed quilt, lap quilt, wall hanging and table topper.  Check out that unusual vine-y border on the lap quilt.

Miss Mabel’s Garden (I have to say I just love this one!) is a collection of patterns with multiple techniques . . . piecing, applique, embroidery.  The book includes placemats, table runners, wall quilts and bed quilts.  Fifteen projects in all for all skill levels.

Be sure to visit the Pine Tree Lodge website where you will find extra downloadable projects to go with some of these patterns.

Christmas Quilt Fabric Panels

Have you seen any of our Christmas quilt fabric panels, or the coordinating fabrics?

Keep Christmas In Your Heart . . . All The Year Through.  Now that’s good advice.  Twelve different Santas, each with a saying under them, are surrounded by a ready made border.  You can just sandwich, quilt, and bind.  Voila! A beautful wall hanging. The panel measures approximately 23″ x 44″

All Around The Town is a collection of five vintage village shops.  Each panel piece includes four smaller buildings and one very large building.  Of course it’s the quilt shop that is the largest!

A 24″ x 43″ panel of Rooftop Santas enjoying different aspects of his job.  Any one of these scenes would make a nice little mini quilt all on its own.  A grouping of mini quilts would look pretty festive.  Or you could stack three of them for a small wallhanging.  Maybe a pillow or two or three?  Use a length of 2 panels for a quick lap quilt.  Stitch two scenes together and add a handle for a reusable gift bag. Endless possibilities!

Make a quick, kid-sized, comfy, cheery lap quilt with Christmas Flannel.  Celebrating penguins in wintry scenes are surrounded by dotty borders.  The light colored background is sprinkled with holly and stars.  Sandwich, quilt, bind and call it done!

Christmas is fast approaching but, by using panels, there is still plenty of time for Christmas projects!

Christmas Quilt Kits

Just 31 days until Christmas!  While some people may want to celebrate Thanksgiving before they think about Christmas, if you are going to make something (or lots of somethings!) for Christmas you need to start now (or last month!).   Our Christmas quilt kits will give you a running start.  With the pattern AND the fabric you’ll be ready to start right away.

Warm woolen mittens and adorable stockings work well as ornaments, as present decorations, or as mini-gift holders.   The Christmas Woolens Complete Kit includes wool felt, embroidery floss and gold string, plus patterns and instrucions.  Easy to make, fun to use, even more fun to give.

Santa and Rudolph will make a great addition to your entryway, welcoming holiday visitors.  The Santa Complete Kit includes EVERYTHING . . . fabric (for the top, back, and binding), batting, buttons, bell, and complete instructions.  All you supply is the thread and the “work”.  Finished wallhanging is 13″ x 15″.

Celebrate The Season is a sampler style quilt that measures 54.5″ x 46.5″.  Piecing, applique, and paper piecing are all part of the process.  The kit includes all the patterns and all the fabric for the quilt top and for the binding.  It’s wintry enough that you can leave it up all season, not just for Christmas.

Skating Party is another Christmas-y quilt that is suitable for the entire winter season.  Starting with a panel from the “Snow Day” fabric line in a blue/sage green/cream color scheme, it will go together quickly.  Simple blocks set on point finish the look.   The kit includes pattern and all the fabric needed for the top and binding.

Browse the rest of the Christmas Quilt Kits.  The kits themselves make great gifts, especially for new quilters.  Or enjoy the construction yourself, and you can gift the finished project . . . if you can part with it!

Snowman Patterns

Most of us haven’t yet seen our first snowfall of the season, but we all know it’s coming eventually.  Snow on the roads usually isn’t a welcome sight, but seeing a snowman will usually bring a smile.  What better focus for a winter quilt than a cheery snowman? Here’s a sampling . . . .

Snowmen Forever offers two options: one is colored with crayons and stitched, the other is appliqued.  The snowmen are then placed in a snowglobe so they won’t melt!  Use as a wallhanging, a pillow, or anything else you choose.

Eight Silly Snowmen dance around in a circle holding, um, sticks.  Toss in some holly leaves, stars, mittens, and birds that all combine to make a fun, busy snowflake.  Also available as a quilt kit – comes with the pattern and all the fabric (everything but the batting). No need to hunt up the perfect fabric; just start sewing!

Here’s a few more Silly Snowmen.  Their winter adventures will make you chuckle, and have you wondering how they will manage to survive until Spring.

Straddling Snowboy hugs a birdhouse as he watches the bird play with his shoelace.  Tiny buttons for eyes and floss for the laces add some three dimensional interest to this wallhanging.

Have fun digging through your scraps to find different outfits for each of these Frosty Babies.  Each on is holding a different prop – just for fun!

This is just a sampling of the patterns available.  Browse all the rest of the Snowman patterns and all the rest of the Snowmen patterns.  Enjoy!
